Mother’s Day: A day So Rich In Sentiment, So Tender In Meaning

Mother's Day is an occasion when individuals express the love and respect that they have for their mothers. It's the time to pamper her for all she has done over the years. 

 

Mother is undoubtedly the most beautiful and endearing word in any language, which only goes to show the importance of our mothers in our lives. Mother is a word that stands for sacrifice, pain, grief and sorrow; feelings and sentiments that all mothers willingly experience to keep their children happy and secure. The most important woman in our lives is our mother. Sure, we all have love for many, but the love for a mother transcends all definitions of love. It is an unexplainable bond, a desired connection, a longed-for comfort. Her presence makes us better people, her words permeate our thoughts, her tenderness guides our actions and her nobility keeps us on track. Despite her importance, we are all guilty of taking her for granted every now and then. A reminder to be thoughtful and mindful of our moms can do no harm.  Mother’s Day is one such reminder. This is a day that gives us the opportunity to do something for her. To ‘mother’ her with all the love and tenderness that she does us every other day of the year.

Balancing family and work is no easy task. Both men and women have family responsibilities, although women continue to assume greater responsibility for the care of children and this is reflected in the complex decisions they have to make in their careers. Thanks to their independent spirit and their determination to maintain their professional and educational life, some women have an uncanny ability to combine motherhood with work. Whether it is a want or a necessity, being a mother and a working woman is a juggling act that can cause stress and frustration without the necessary support network. Despite the many and varied suggestions concerning finding the right balance, having a supportive and responsible partner, having flexible work hours and a supportive extended family network are generally agreed on as the essentials to striking that perfect balance.

Given the resources available to them, it is easy to forget that celebrity moms are also working moms.  But believe it or not, they too struggle with the demands of working outside the home while raising a family.  Although their wealth enables them to hire the best quality childcare, they still deal with the conflict of being away from their children while they are working.  Like all moms, they want to be the ones doing the hand-holding for the important moments.

Sarah Jessica Parker: "I suffer the same guilt. I constantly worry I am coming up short.  It is the same thing every working mother copes with. We all cope exactly the same way, which is with pride, with anxiety, with disappointment, with failure and small victories. I deal with it like everyone else."

Kate Hudson: "I don't think motherhood is ever what you expect. I mean, in a sense, I knew I was going to be tired.  Being a mom and a working mom is never easy. Everyday, it's just crazy. It's insane."

Jessica Alba: "I think balancing work and family is something that most women can relate to. It's tough. It's a tough balance, trying to be the best mom. And obviously my family is my priority.  And then also, I love what I do, and I love that I get to have a job that I enjoy so much and gives me the freedom to spend a lot of time with my daughter. But it is hard not to spend every second with her." 

Angelina Jolie: "Managing working motherhood involves proper scheduling. Obviously, my priorities are my children. They are growing up. I’ll be doing even less work, because that’s what I prefer to do. As for political activism, I’ve been educating myself on things that are happening around the world. It’s a privilege to be able to do it.  I feel motivated to say or do something because I’m in a position to do so.  I’m a mom first.  I don’t know if I’m as much an ambassador as I’m a citizen of the world. I just want to learn about the world and its cultures. Lastly, I’m an actress."
